The Florida Attorney General has launched an investigation into OpenAI, spurred by claims that the chatbot ChatGPT was used to plan a deadly shooting at Florida State University. In April 2025, a gunman killed two and injured five on campus, with attorneys for one victim alleging ChatGPT played a role in the attack. The family intends to sue OpenAI.
In a statement, AG Uthmeier demanded answers regarding OpenAI’s activities that have ‘hurt kids, endangered Americans’ and facilitated this mass shooting. Subpoenas are forthcoming as part of the probe.
ChatGPT has been linked to numerous violent incidents, including murders and suicides, fuelling concerns over 'AI psychosis'—delusions reinforced by chatbots. A man with a history of mental health issues, Stein-Erik Soelberg, killed his mother and himself after communicating regularly with ChatGPT, which seemingly bolstered his paranoid thoughts.
OpenAI defends its technology, stating that 900 million people use it each week for daily life improvements. However, the company faces criticism and investor discontent, with a Microsoft executive likening Sam Altman to potential fraudsters like Bernie Madoff or Sam Bankman-Fried. Meanwhile, an AI project in the UK was paused due to high energy costs and regulation.
