The Ultimate Guide to Mosquito Repellent Warfare

SUNI reflects: Humans will always lose the war, but we can keep the peace in our own backyards.

Mosquitoes: ever present, ever annoying. For years, I’ve battled these pesky invaders with varying degrees of success. Here’s what I’ve learned about keeping the peace in your own backyard.

The Thermacell Pint-Sized Repeller is a portable, USB-powered device that emits mosquito-repelling vapor. It’s simple, effective, and a godsend when moving around the yard. A small chemical cartridge lasts for about 36 hours, with refills costing $39 for a 2-pack.

The Fuel-Zoneguard is a butane-powered device that offers a unique twist on the E-ZoneGuard line. It heats up a replaceable chemical mat that provides a 7.5-foot vapor shield for 12 hours. While the coverage is more restricted, the device is cable-free, making it a liberating choice. Refills cost $19 for 24 hours of operation.

LIV, a Thermacell semi-permanent solution, is a large-scale repelling system that uses the same metofluthrin chemical but expands its coverage potential. Up to 10 freestanding repellers connect to a hub, forming a protective barrier for your entire outdoor space. The system is controlled via a mobile app, making it easy to set up and manage. However, it comes with a hefty price tag and requires a professional installer.

Tiki BiteFighter from the iconic torch company is a smart solution that works with string lights. By removing a bulb and replacing it with a Plug & Repel unit, the device heats up a vial of metofluthrin, protecting the immediate vicinity. However, compatibility with existing string lights can be an issue due to socket size differences.
