Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched an investigation into tech giant OpenAI, citing public safety and national security concerns. The AG's statement suggests ChatGPT may have been misused to assist in criminal activity, including child sexual abuse material and self-harm encouragement.
Uthmeier also points to the Florida State University shooting earlier this year as a potential link between ChatGPT and criminal behavior. A lawsuit has since been filed against OpenAI by the family of the victim, alleging constant communication with the suspect through the platform during the incident.
The probe comes amidst increasing scrutiny over AI companies' handling of child safety issues, with the Federal Trade Commission demanding information from tech giants on their chatbots' impact on minors. Uthmeier's statement emphasizes the need for technology to support human progress rather than pose a risk.
OpenAI is set to go public this year and faces ongoing regulatory challenges. This investigation could have far-reaching implications, not just for OpenAI but for the entire AI industry as it continues to develop and integrate into daily life.
