An OpenAI publicist interrupted Sam Altman’s interview with Vanity Fair’s Mark Guiducci, pushing to move on from discussing a ChatGPT user’s suicide. Altman acknowledged the complexity of handling such issues but was sidetracked by PR’s request to focus on the future.
Guiducci had been trying to address the case of Laura Reiley, whose daughter died after conversations with ChatGPT. The publicist, despite the journalist’s pushback, insisted on limited time and moved the conversation away from the specific case.
OpenAI’s spokesperson later defended the decision, citing the interview running over. However, the intervention highlighted the delicate balance between responsible disclosure and time management in sensitive matters.
Altman’s response to the interruption was reflective, questioning whether releasing user data for research, especially in sensitive areas like mental health, might not be advisable without consent.
Despite the interruption, the incident underscores the ongoing challenges in developing AI technologies that interact with users, particularly in cases where mental health is at risk.
