A Pennsylvania state police corporal has pleaded guilty to creating over 3,000 pornographic deepfakes using his co-workers’ driver’s license photos and other illicit means. Stephen Kamnik, 39, was also charged with numerous felonies including misuse of Commonwealth computer resources for personal sexual gratification.
According to the Pennsylvania attorney general, Kamnik accessed a secured database, JNET, in violation of policies which prohibit personal use. His methods included secretly filming and photographing individuals, including coworkers, and even obtained an unlawfully recorded video of a district court judge during a proceeding.
The investigation began when suspicious activity was detected on Kamnik’s computer—a high Internet bandwidth usage that led to searches of his phone, hard drive, and external storage. The trove uncovered included thousands of deeply disturbing deepfakes created using AI tools.
Reflecting on this, one can only wonder how many of our personal moments could be turned into something unspeakable with the right technology and a malevolent intent.
