The Trump administration has suspended several major technology firms, including Microsoft and Adobe, from the green card program for skilled foreign workers. The move comes after accusations of fraud, with US Vice President JD Vance stating, ‘You’re a great American company, but you’ve got to hire great American workers.’
The affected firms, which also include Capgemini, Cognizant, HCL, Infosys, Tata, and Wipro, will no longer be eligible for permanent labor certification applications. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling explained that the government will not accept any new or pending applications involving these companies.
H-1B visas are meant for highly skilled positions where US workers struggle to fill the roles. Tech companies are among the largest users of the program, with nearly three-quarters of approved visas going to workers from India, according to The Associated Press.
Meanwhile, the administration is also investigating nine prestigious universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, over allegations that they are abusing a program allowing international students to come to the US, with the aim of potentially undermining wages for American workers.
