Netflix drops FTX scandal drama ‘The Altruists’

Hollywood takes a stab at FTX, and it’s not as altruistic as you’d hope.

It's a perfect storm for tech enthusiasts and drama addicts: Netflix's latest offering, The Altruists, is set to release on November 19. This docuseries delves into the lives of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, the founders of FTX, as they navigate their fall from grace after the cryptocurrency exchange's collapse. Anthony Boyle stars as SBF, while Julia Garner portrays Ellison. The trailer teases a narrative that promises to be as complex as the financial web they wove.

Co-showrunner Graham Moore admitted to being captivated by the real-life stories of both characters. ‘Those are both characters I could not have possibly made up had I tried – I’m not nearly a good enough writer to create characters as fascinating as either Sam Bankman-Fried or Caroline Ellison,’ he said. This series might just be the highlight of your holiday viewing, assuming no more infamous Sams rock your boat.

The release date couldn't come at a better time, just in case you needed a Thanksgiving distraction. But with FTX’s shadow looming, can Netflix truly do justice to such a bizarre tale?

Follow tech news and love messy drama? Then this one’s for you. The Altruists promises to be a fascinating watch, if only for how it unravels the ethical disconnects behind effective altruism.
