Meredith Whittaker, boss of the Signal Foundation, warns against the hype surrounding AI threats, instead emphasizing the dangers of careless use. She cites an incident where a chatbot almost led to a military confrontation with China, highlighting a system's potential for producing faulty intelligence.
Whittaker, who has previously led protests against Google's military contracts, maintains a firm stance on user privacy, stating that Signal would leave any country that forced it to weaken its encryption.
She criticizes government efforts to monitor messaging apps, arguing that technology companies should not be required to prevent child abuse content, as these measures can be easily circumvented. However, she acknowledges that the app can also be misused by bad actors.
Despite these challenges, Whittaker’s approach is clear: protect user privacy and hold companies accountable for their choices. She argues that any platform must work for everyone or it works for no-one, echoing the principles of fundamental rights.
