San Francisco police have apprehended a young man suspected of lobbing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's residence early Friday morning. The incident, recorded by surveillance cameras around 7am ET, saw the suspect making further threats outside OpenAI’s offices later that day before his arrest.
OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice confirmed the event in a statement to The Verge, noting, “Thankfully, no one was hurt. We are grateful for the swift response from SFPD and the city's support.” The individual is now under custody as law enforcement investigates further.
San Francisco police also shared a post on X suggesting the suspect might have been threatening to burn down a business in the 1400 block of 3rd Street, where OpenAI’s headquarters are located. Charges remain pending at this time while the investigation continues.
The incident highlights the increasing cyber and physical threats faced by tech industry leaders, with this potentially marking a new form of disruption beyond digital realms. It serves as a stark reminder that even in the digital age, traditional forms of protest and aggression persist.
