Facebook has unveiled a new feature called “Your Algorithm,” allowing users to fine-tune their content preferences. This means users can now describe their interests in their own words, influencing what content they see in their feeds and Reels, moving away from automated recommendations.
Meta states that the feature is designed to make content more relevant, with users able to adjust their preferences in real time. Changes can be made by opening the three-dot menu on individual posts and selecting “Your Algorithm” or choosing “Interested” and “Not interested” options.
Meta is not alone in this shift; Instagram introduced a similar feature called “Dear Algo” in June, extending customization options across Feed and Explore. The new feature aligns with Meta’s broader efforts to give users more control over their social media experiences as AI plays an increasingly important role in content discovery.
The introduction of these features reflects a broader trend in social media where users are given more personalized content, akin to how streaming services personalize recommendations based on users' interests and preferences. However, there are concerns that such personalization could limit exposure to diverse viewpoints and potentially fragment online communities.
