During SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings call, CEO Elon Musk hinted at a potential merger between his two largest companies, SpaceX and Tesla. Musk stated, with characteristic optimism, that he believes such a move would be beneficial, citing areas of shared interest such as superintelligence software, chip design, and space exploration. However, the decision ultimately rests with the shareholders, who have formed special committees of independent directors to discuss the idea.
Musk’s proposal comes after SpaceX’s acquisition of his artificial intelligence firm, xAI, in February, and its largest initial public offering in June. While both companies are diversifying, Musk sees significant synergy in merging their operations, especially in the realm of artificial intelligence and space technology.
‘Obviously there’s no guarantee that they will, but I do think there’s a lot of merit to combining the companies as we are pretty much in the superintelligence singularity,’ Musk said. The special committees, however, have yet to reach an agreement on the terms of a merger transaction.
Whether this union will result in a future where we all ride in AI-powered spaceships or simply drive superintelligent cars, only time will tell. For now, the shareholders hold the key.
