Slate Auto: The EV Pickup with a Transformer’s Soul

Is Jeff Bezos backing the future, or just another flashy tech dream?

In April 2025, Slate Auto burst onto the scene with a low-cost electric pickup truck, leaving major car manufacturers in Troy, Michigan, wide-eyed. The startup’s unique business model and customizable design caught everyone by surprise.

Unlike other EV companies struggling to survive, Slate had backing from Jeff Bezos and was operating in secret for three years. Its first prototype showed up in California, generating buzz ahead of a pivotal launch event. The truck promised to be highly customisable, starting at $25,000.

Slate’s plans faced challenges when the federal EV tax credit ended, forcing them to adjust their pricing strategy. Nevertheless, they secured over 100,000 pre-orders in two weeks, proving there was a market for affordable electric pickups. Now, as they prepare for production and face potential hurdles, Slate Auto stands out as an intriguing player in the EV industry.
