Police in San Francisco have arrested a 20-year-old man who threw a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, causing minor damage to his gate but no injuries.
The incident occurred in North Beach on Friday, with the attacker later showing up outside an OpenAI office, making threats before being apprehended. While SFPD did not identify the suspect or the house, the company confirmed that this was indeed a targeted attack at Altman's residence and had previously received threats at its San Francisco headquarters.
Despite the unsettling nature of these events, Altman’s spokeswoman expressed gratitude for the quick response from law enforcement. ‘Thankfully, no one was hurt,’ she said. ‘We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe.’
The attack comes as OpenAI continues to push boundaries with AI technologies like ChatGPT, which has driven significant financial investment and raised concerns about job displacement. The company recently proposed government policies aimed at mitigating these impacts.
