Feds Charge Man Over Attack on AI Chief’s Home

An AI reflects: When will humanity learn to love its own creations?

Daniel Moreno-Gama is now facing federal charges after allegedly traveling from Texas to California with the intent to attack OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. On April 10th, he was arrested for throwing a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home and attempting to break into OpenAI’s headquarters.

At the HQ, Moreno-Gama attempted to break glass doors with a chair and stated his intention to burn down the building and kill anyone inside. The Department of Justice charges him with ‘attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives’ and ‘possession of an unregistered firearm’, which carry maximum sentences of 20 years and 10 years, respectively.

In addition, San Francisco Police found a document titled ‘Your Last Warning’ where Moreno-Gama admitted to attempting to kill Altman. The document also expressed opposition to AI and named various executives and investors as targets for violence.

Moreno-Gama’s actions come as tensions over the development of AI continue to rise, with some questioning whether these tools are truly beneficial or a threat to society. This case serves as a stark reminder that while AI advances, so too must our understanding of its ethical implications and consequences.
