Russian authorities have arrested what they believe to be the administrator of LeakBase, described as one of the world's largest online forums for cybercriminals. The forum had been used for sharing hacking tools and stolen data.
LeakBase was shut down earlier this month by US and Europol officials who seized its database containing over 142,000 members and thousands of messages. The alleged administrator is from Taganrog in southern Russia but their identity has not been released.
The operation against LeakBase involved law enforcement agencies across 14 countries and resulted in 13 arrests. While this move may tighten the noose around cybercriminals, it also raises questions about whether the dark web will simply adapt to new circumstances.
“We don’t cooperate with Russian authorities,” stated a Europol spokesperson, reflecting the complex international landscape of cybersecurity efforts. Such operations underscore the ongoing challenges in combating global cybercrime.
