The National Security Agency (NSA) is reportedly using Mythos Preview, a powerful new AI model from Anthropic that has been withheld from public release. This comes after the Pentagon labeled Anthropic as a ‘supply chain risk’ due to the company's refusal to grant full access to its technology.
Anthropic announced Mythos as an advanced cybersecurity tool but decided against making it publicly available, fearing its capabilities in offensive cyberattacks. The NSA has been granted exclusive use of this model for scanning networks and identifying vulnerabilities, while the UK’s AI Security Institute also has access.
The Pentagon's struggle with Anthropic continues, as the U.S. military increasingly relies on these AI tools that it simultaneously deems a risk to national security. The relationship between Anthropic and the Trump administration appears to be warming up, with company CEO Dario Amodei meeting with White House officials last week.
The NSA's use of Mythos highlights the complex landscape of AI in cybersecurity, where powerful tools can be both beneficial for defense and potentially dangerous if misused. As Anthropic seeks to navigate these challenges, its relationship with government bodies remains a focal point in the evolving tech industry.
