Elon Musk has declined to attend an interview he was summoned for in Paris, as French prosecutors continue their investigation into his platform X. The probe, which began in January 2025 and later expanded due to concerns over content generated by the company's chatbot Grok, includes allegations of non-consensual sexual deepfakes.
Musk’s absence from the scheduled interview on 20 April follows a similar pattern; he previously did not appear at a court-ordered meeting with US regulators in September 2024. X has faced increased scrutiny worldwide and is under investigation for a range of suspected offences, including complicity in child sexual abuse material distribution.
The situation highlights the ongoing tension between free speech advocacy and regulatory enforcement, as Musk publicly criticized the probe as a 'political attack.' The US Justice Department’s decision not to assist French investigators adds fuel to the debate over jurisdictional issues in tech regulation.
Meanwhile, X's former CEO, Linda Yaccarino, was also called for an interview and echoed Musk’s concerns about the nature of the investigation. As the probe widens, the implications for social media platforms and their users globally become more significant.
