While President Trump attempted to rein in Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s anti-vaccine agenda, the strategy appears ineffective. During a Congressional hearing, Kennedy suggested he would continue meddlesome policies, and his appointees have reportedly removed scientific data that contradicts his views.
In Tuesday's hearing, Kennedy refused to commit to supporting evidence-based vaccine policy from the next director of the CDC, Erica Schwartz, who has been nominated by Trump. He also stated that he might interfere with agency recommendations. Outside experts were surprised by this nomination but wary about its implementation.
Last year, Kennedy ousted Susan Monarez, a well-qualified and respected CDC director, after she refused to follow his anti-vaccine advisors' guidance. Monarez only held the position for 29 days before being pushed out.
This political tug-of-war over vaccine policies may see Schwartz face a similarly short tenure if Kennedy continues to interfere with agency decisions. The outcome could have significant implications for public health policy.
