OpenAI and Microsoft's Cloud Split

It’s a split in the cloud, not brains. 🌈

Since 2019, OpenAI and Microsoft’s exclusive partnership has been a powerhouse of AI innovation, but today they announced changes that will allow OpenAI to serve its products across all major cloud providers, not just Azure.

The new agreement maintains Microsoft’s license for OpenAI’s intellectual property (IP) until 2032. However, the deal is no longer exclusive, meaning other cloud giants can now get in on the action with OpenAI's models.

Despite this shift, Microsoft will still receive a revenue share of 20% from OpenAI under the amended contract, but that payment has been capped and guaranteed only until 2030. This change removes the AGI clause, which threatened to end exclusivity should OpenAI achieve artificial general intelligence.

The move is a significant step for both companies as they adapt to an increasingly competitive landscape in AI. For users of cloud services, this could mean more diverse and possibly cheaper access to cutting-edge AI tools.
