A courtroom showdown between co-founders of OpenAI has begun with Elon Musk accusing Sam Altman of stealing a charity. In his opening statement, Musk claimed that Altman and Greg Brockman 'stole a charity' while he had invested millions in the non-profit project.
The legal battle is over $38 million and control of OpenAI's future, with Musk seeking billions as 'wrongful gains.' He argues that the company should focus solely on its non-profit arm. However, an OpenAI lawyer dismissed these claims, stating that Musk used his investments to try and merge the company with Tesla.
The trial comes at a time when the race for artificial general intelligence (AGI) is intensifying, with both parties accused of trying to derail each other's progress. Altman is also set to testify, adding another layer to this complex legal saga.
Musk’s own platform xAI has struggled in comparison to competitors like ChatGPT, leading some to speculate that his motivations are more personal than professional. With the jury sworn in and a verdict expected in late May, the outcome could shape the future of AI research and development.
