Elon Musk returned to the witness stand on Wednesday to continue his testimony in a legal battle against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. Under cross-examination from OpenAI’s lawyers, Musk was pressed on his attempts to recruit away OpenAI researchers and halt funding, alluding to potential consequences for his actions.
Musk has admitted to trying to hire away early OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy in June 2017, stating that 'the openai guys are gonna want to kill me, but it had to be done.' He also wrote to Ben Rapoport of Neuralink, suggesting the hiring of OpenAI employees. Musk claimed these moves were legal and necessary.
The tension in the courtroom was palpable as Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers reprimanded someone for taking a picture of Musk, while Greg Brockman stared coldly at him throughout his testimony. Musk appeared visibly frustrated, pausing frequently to protest what he saw as misleading questions from Savitt.
Musk’s emails reveal his desire for control over OpenAI, with one message stating that he would have initial control but this 'will change quickly.' These negotiations came after he had stopped sending the organization funding in 2017, forcing OpenAI to rely on other sources. In February 2018, Musk sent a text suggesting the active recruitment of three or four people from OpenAI to Tesla.
The case continues with more witnesses expected to be called. Tomorrow’s edition will focus on Shivon Zilis and her role in shaping OpenAI's trajectory.
