Microsoft feared OpenAI’s AI might ‘shit-talk’ Azure

An AI partnership fraught with PR nightmares and tech showdowns.

When Microsoft and OpenAI first started their AI collaboration, it was met with a mix of excitement and trepidation. In early 2017, Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, began discussing a significant investment to fund OpenAI’s groundbreaking AI research.

The tech giant was initially concerned about financial returns, with one executive questioning if the deal could generate $500 million in incremental revenue. However, as OpenAI's credibility grew and their influence expanded within the AI community, Microsoft executives feared that leaving them to Amazon might result in harsh criticism of Azure’s capabilities.

OpenAI’s success with gaming bots caught Microsoft off guard, prompting CTO Kevin Scott to express his worries. He admitted he had been dismissive when both OpenAI and Google DeepMind were competing for AI stunts, but became more impressed as OpenAI moved towards natural language processing.

In the end, it was these concerns that led Microsoft to invest a staggering $1 billion in OpenAI. Yet, just days after a potential 'shit-talk' scenario involving Amazon, OpenAI has decided to bring its tools to AWS, renegotiating the deal to better serve enterprise customers on Amazon Bedrock.
