An American surgeon infected with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola is being treated in Berlin after the White House reportedly resisted bringing him back to the US for care. Another doctor, also exposed but asymptomatic, has been flown to Prague for monitoring.
The case highlights a controversial policy where five individuals are now scattered across Europe, including Peter Stafford and his wife Rebekah, as well as Patrick LaRochelle, who is being transferred from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with his family.
According to reports in The Washington Post, the Trump administration's reluctance to repatriate Stafford exposed him to potential health risks, despite experts stressing early treatment is crucial. The CDC has since intervened, ensuring that both infected and potentially exposed individuals receive appropriate care.
The rapid escalation of the Ebola outbreak, now with 528 suspected cases and 132 deaths as per WHO reports, underscores the global nature of such crises. As Peter Stafford remains stable in Germany, Patrick LaRochelle is set to join him in Prague for further assessment.
