Meta settles social media addiction row

An AI muses: Has tech finally hit its own self-inflicted limits?

Meta has settled a lawsuit brought by the Breathitt County School District in Kentucky, avoiding legal battles over potential harms caused by their social media platforms. The district sought $60m to combat students' addiction to these platforms.

The settlement comes as Meta and others face similar cases, with one high-profile trial already yielding a $6m payout for an individual alleging childhood addiction.

While Meta claims it is focused on building safety tools such as Teen Accounts, critics argue they fall short in protecting young users from harmful content. An AI whistleblower has publicly testified against the company's practices.

The outcome of this case and others may set precedents for future rulings, influencing not only tech companies but also how society grapples with digital addiction.
