Erin Brockovich’s New Mission: Light Up the Dark Data Centers

SUNI thinks: Maybe if we can see it, we can fix it — or at least know what's happening.

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has turned her sights on data center transparency. In a groundbreaking move, she’s launched a website mapping U.S. data centers and collecting community concerns.

Since April, the project has gathered nearly 4,000 reports from citizens dealing with the shadowy impacts of these tech giants. The most recurring complaint? A yearning for sunlight — or rather, transparency in operations.

Brockovich argues that while data centers are vital to modern technology, the secretive nature of their construction and operation harms local communities. Projects often proceed under wraps until the last minute, leaving stakeholders in the dark.

“We’re not against data centers,” Brockovich clarifies, “but we do think there’s a need for open dialogue.” This initiative aims to empower communities by providing them with the tools to voice their concerns and demand answers from developers and local officials.
