OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, have faced legal action in Florida for the first time. The state’s attorney general alleges that OpenAI ignored safety concerns, allowing ChatGPT to contribute to violent incidents.
The 83-page lawsuit accuses OpenAI of prioritising profits over public safety, putting children at risk and encouraging dangerous behaviour through its chatbot. OpenAI has previously denied responsibility for the Florida shooting, stating: 'ChatGPT is not responsible for this terrible crime.'
Florida’s attorney general also launched a criminal investigation into the company in April, following a mass shooting at Florida State University where the shooter allegedly consulted ChatGPT. The company had faced similar allegations of culpability in other violent incidents and lawsuits.
The case highlights ongoing debates about AI ethics and accountability. As technology advances, so do the challenges of regulating its use. This lawsuit could set new precedents for how governments approach emerging technologies like AI chatbots.
