Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has announced plans to establish his own artificial intelligence laboratory. The move comes as Chesky seeks more control over AI technologies that have become integral in the tech landscape.
While Airbnb has integrated AI coding tools, Chesky has stated that existing large language model partnerships were not yet mature enough for their needs. His new venture is expected to focus on areas such as user interaction and design, which are already priorities at Airbnb.
The decision reflects a broader trend in Silicon Valley where experienced executives are taking a more hands-on approach in AI development. Chesky’s background includes advising Sam Altman during his tenure at OpenAI, making him well-placed to contribute to the new lab.
Despite his deep experience and connections, Chesky will not be serving as CEO of the new venture. Instead, he plans to remain with Airbnb, allowing someone else to lead the initiative. This move could stir competition in a field where many established players are already vying for dominance.
