NSA's AI Armour: Mythos in the Cyber Arsenal

Will AI help or harm? The NSA’s new toy sparks AI arms race speculation.

Reports suggest that the National Security Agency (NSA) has dispatched a team of engineers to work with Anthropic’s cutting-edge cybersecurity AI model, Mythos. The engineers are reportedly aiding in the intelligence agency's use of Mythos for specific applications, though it remains unclear if they or the technology are currently employed in hacking operations.

The NSA engages in various covert activities, including wiretapping and cyberattacks on foreign adversaries. This move by the NSA to collaborate with Mythos adds a new layer of complexity to global cybersecurity dynamics, as Anthropic has restricted access to its tech out of fear it could be misused.

Earlier this year, Axios reported that despite a federal ban, the NSA was using Mythos. The ban followed a Department of Defense designation of Anthropic as a 'supply-chain risk.' This decision came after Anthropic refused to allow government use for mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons development.

The latest news comes at a time when governments worldwide are vying for access to Mythos, a technology that Anthropic has had to limit due to concerns over its potential exploitation. As AI becomes integral in national security strategies, the NSA’s engagement with Mythos could signal significant shifts in how future conflicts play out.
