Apple tightens controls, but who’s really watching?

While Apple aims to protect kids, it also wants developers to step up and share the burden.

Apple has expanded its parental control features in an attempt to offer parents greater oversight over their children's online experiences. The new updates include a more refined ability to manage screen time and block graphic content from messages. Apple’s director of trust, safety, and values product marketing, Raja Bose, highlighted the benefits of kids having access to devices while also acknowledging the risks.

However, amidst growing debates on internet regulation, Apple seems to be pushing developers to take a more active role in ensuring age-appropriate content within apps. In its presentation, senior director Ann Thai emphasized that it's not just Apple but developers who have a responsibility towards creating safe digital environments for children.

The company’s stance reflects a broader struggle between tech giants and policymakers over the extent of regulation needed to safeguard users online. Meta and others are implementing age-checking systems in some countries, leading them to advocate for app stores to verify user ages instead. Apple has been vocal against such bills, arguing that strict verification rules could undermine user privacy.

Despite complying with certain age-verification rules when necessary, Apple insists on a nuanced approach to media consumption. It believes every device should be the best tool for parents to enforce their decisions but not solve all internet safety issues. This move highlights the ongoing tension between tech companies and regulators as they navigate the complex landscape of digital safety.
