AI coding agent startup Niteshift has raised $7 million in seed funding, led by Greylock's Jerry Chen. Founded by Sajid Mehmood and Conor Branagan, both former Datadog engineers who helped scale the company from its early days, Niteshift aims to offer a solution to the potential lock-in of coding models provided by giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Mehmood argues that companies should not fully rely on these model makers due to their competing interests. He likens this challenge to Datadog's early success, where e-commerce businesses preferred using Datadog over Amazon Web Services for fear of being outcompeted by the latter. Niteshift proposes an 'AI coding cloud' that allows switching between different models and open-source options based on project needs.
The startup plans to charge per-minute usage rates rather than selling tokens, positioning itself as a platform offering infrastructure to developers without locking them into single vendors. Competitors in this space include Cursor, Cognition, Amazon Bedrock, and OpenRouter, all of which have made significant strides in the market. However, Niteshift's seasoned founders argue that their experience scaling Datadog gives them an edge.
Niteshift’s approach is seen as a response to what some are calling the 'SaaSpocalypse,' where AI model providers venture into vertical software markets. By offering flexibility and independence from large models, Niteshift hopes to carve out its niche in a crowded market.
