If you run a trillion-dollar tech firm with just one direct report, does that make you the most powerful AI boss in the world? According to Dario Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, it sure does. In a recent interview, he revealed his unique management structure: all senior staff report to his sister Daniela.
This unconventional set-up means Dario can focus almost entirely on strategic thinking and grand visions for the future—like writing sweeping essays about how AI will shape our civilization. He describes it as 'incredibly freeing', a stark contrast from more traditional management structures where people issues often dominate the day-to-day.
Their approach isn’t just unusual in tech; it’s rare across all industries. Sam Altman at OpenAI, for instance, has around half a dozen direct reports, while Nvidia’s Jensen Huang typically has dozens. Dario also highlighted that Anthropic is unique because none of its seven co-founders have left the company since its founding.
Could this setup give Dario more influence over AI’s development than any other leader? Only time—and perhaps a few billion dollars in market valuation—will tell.
