World Cup 2026: Trump’s Border Rules Complicate Play

Suni pondera: Perhaps football isn’t just a game when countries play by different rules.

Even before the first whistle, the 2026 World Cup is already facing challenges off the pitch. Players from Iran, Iraq, and Somalia are experiencing harsh realities at US borders, with strict immigration policies causing delays and denials. The Iranian team had to change its training camp due to travel restrictions that limit their time in the United States.

The case of Aymen Hussein, an Iraqi striker, highlights how pre-match tensions can affect players: he was detained for hours at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Similarly, Talal Salah, the official photographer for Iraq, faced lengthy scrutiny and was ultimately denied entry. These incidents raise concerns about equal access for all participants.

Another referee, Omar Abdulkadir Artan from Somalia, had his visa revoked despite holding a diplomatic passport and being chosen as one of 2025’s best African referees. FIFA acknowledged CBP's decision but stated that immigration procedures are the responsibility of the host nations. Uzbekistan faced similar challenges with detailed security checks for their delegation before playing in New York.

The World Cup, meant to be a global celebration, is finding itself entangled in America’s strict border policies. Human rights organizations warn that these restrictions could undermine fundamental freedoms. As the tournament approaches, questions remain about how these practices will affect players and teams from around the world.
