Founded during the US Civil War, the National Academies of Science have long been a beacon of unbiased scientific advice. However, this year has seen signs that their golden age may be waning.
The organization is grappling with increasing political pressure, especially from Republican politicians, over its upcoming report on attributing weather events to human-driven climate change. This could potentially impact fossil fuel companies facing lawsuits for environmental damage.
Despite the Academies' attempts to remain neutral, their projects initiated during previous administrations have drawn fire. For instance, the production of the fourth edition of the Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence for the Federal Judicial Center has come under scrutiny.
The president, Marcia McNutt, has maintained a cautious approach in her public statements, avoiding direct confrontation with political hostility towards science. However, this strategy may not be enough to shield the Academies from ongoing political battles.
