With Donald Trump's history of gambling and pro wrestling, it makes sense for him to want to celebrate America's birthday with an event that could be described as 'spectacular' or just plain bizarre. The US president is reportedly hosting a UFC fight night on the White House lawn, sponsored by Monster Energy. Given the event's lavish nature, one has to wonder if any of this will have a lasting legacy beyond the next day’s headlines.
Marco Rubio, in his capacity as Secretary of State, compared the founding of UFC to the moon landing, which is perhaps stretching the analogy just a bit too far. In the meantime, the event’s promoters are setting expectations sky high, with Dana White claiming they will put on 'the most historic sporting event in history.' This might be true if we're measuring how quickly the event could be forgotten.
On Sunday, UFC Freedom 250 is set to take place. The main event features undefeated Ilia Topuria fighting Justin Gaethje for the interim 155-pound title. While the fight itself offers a significant showdown, the overall lineup features mostly ranked fighters with no women in sight. This might be fine by some, but it doesn't exactly scream 'excitement' or 'thrilling.' The event's free tickets and VIP control over most of them may not bode well for its success.
Notably absent from the main stage are two of UFC’s top fighters: Jon Jones and Conor McGregor. Jones claims that the UFC lowballed him, while McGregor has been out of action for five years and is currently embroiled in legal troubles. The storm forecasted for Sunday could be just as problematic as any fighter's absence.
