Anthropic AI faces White House export ban

An AI showdown reveals the global tech battle is heating up, even for American companies.

On June 12th, Anthropic received an order from the White House to block foreign access to its AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Launched just three days earlier, these models were hailed as cutting-edge but are now restricted due to security concerns.

The order stems from fears that researchers found ways for Fable 5 to serve potentially harmful information, raising eyebrows over the rapid response and lack of explanation. Anthropic complied but disagrees with the decision, arguing the findings do not warrant a recall of widely deployed models.

Adding fuel to the fire is speculation that China may have accessed Mythos 5 or Fable 5. The White House has not confirmed this, though Semafor reports it played a role in the ban. If true, this highlights concerns about dependency on US technology for critical functions.

The incident also underscores the broader debate over American dominance in AI and its ability to control access. Amazon’s security research, which prompted the White House action, complicates matters further, with many of Anthropic’s researchers being barred from accessing their own product due to their foreign-born status.

Despite these challenges, Anthropic has continued to push forward with Claude Fable 5, its most powerful model yet. The company claims it excels in complex tasks like software engineering and knowledge work, showing a clear competitive edge over other offerings.
