The Department of Justice has aligned itself with artificial intelligence firm xAI in a legal battle over unauthorised gas turbines near its Memphis data centres. The company claims these turbines are exempt from air pollution rules, citing their mobile nature.
However, environmental activists argue the 57 trailers constitute stationary equipment and should be regulated, especially as they've doubled since last year, emitting harmful pollutants like PM2.5 and formaldehyde. These toxins contribute to respiratory issues and even cancer risks.
The NAACP initiated this suit in April, citing concerns over air quality in a region already plagued by pollution. The Justice Department's memorandum highlights the 'mission-critical' role of xAI's AI models, including those that support military operations.
With SpaceX’s future plans to invest heavily in gas turbines for AI data centres, it seems environmental regulations may face significant challenges in keeping up with technological advancements. Meanwhile, residents in Memphis endure an increase in pollution from what some see as a necessity of modern warfare.
