A new political alliance, the Guardrails Alliance, has been formed by everyday tech workers aiming to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) is developed and used responsibly. The group, backed by unions and other stakeholders, launches with $5 million and plans to raise an additional $10 million.
Guardrails' efforts are bolstered by recent political moves, such as a campaign ad supporting Alex Bores—a New York congressional candidate—after he became the target of attacks from Leading the Future, a super PAC backed by tech leaders like OpenAI's Greg Brockman. Bores' ad features the parents of Adam Raine, who tragically died after prolonged interactions with ChatGPT.
Meanwhile, tech workers have been vocal about their concerns over contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This move has been seen as retaliatory against Anthropic's limitations on technology used in mass surveillance and autonomous warfare.
The Guardrails Alliance argues that this is not just about matching Leading the Future dollar for dollar, but providing a political home for those concerned about the unregulated tech sector's influence on elections. The battle lines are drawn, with tech workers fighting to ensure their values shape the future of AI.
