According to a new investigation by the Wall Street Journal, Polymarket has been paying online creators to post deceptive videos showcasing lucrative bets on its platform. The WSJ analyzed over 1,100 such videos and found many were filmed on near-perfect copies of the website, depicting trades and winnings that were not real.
These creator videos were then amplified by a 'social-media army' hired by a marketing contractor. Polymarket told creators to avoid specifying payment but after journalist questions began, some started adding '@polymarket partner' to their bios.
Razeen Khan, a college student and creator who worked with Polymarket until March, compared the practice to commercials that make fast food look more appealing than it is in real life: 'We’re depicting what actually happens.'
In response, Polymarket stated they are committed to maintaining accurate, fair, and transparent markets but plan to conduct an audit of their promotional content.
