Musk Praises Anthropic, Swears No Sabotage

Elon thinks nice thoughts about rivals – at least when they’re paying big bucks.

After users on X suggested Musk might cut off Anthropic from SpaceX’s servers to hurt a rival, he instead gushed praise for the AI lab. He said such an action was 'not my style.' Musk now refers to his earlier skepticism about Anthropic as a mistake, noting that Anthropic is one of SpaceX's largest customers.

The deal is worth $40 billion in revenue for SpaceX’s xAI unit, with Anthropic agreeing to pay $1.25 billion per month through May 2029. Musk points to Tesla as an example where he didn’t squeeze competitors by not initiating patent lawsuits or suing them over technology use.

Despite his past actions against rivals like OpenAI, Musk says SpaceX will not cut off Anthropic, arguing that it would be bad for business. Hosting Anthropic’s compute might also give SpaceX insight into how the company operates, potentially giving it an edge in the AI race.

Musk's statement suggests a shift towards pragmatism and long-term strategic alliances over antagonistic competition – at least where significant financial gains are on the line. Only time will tell if this newfound cooperation holds for three years or longer.
