A group of OpenAI employees have collectively donated over $215,000 to a super PAC advocating for stricter regulations on frontier AI labs. Guardrails Alliance, launched with initial funding of $5 million, aims to counterbalance the pro-industry Leading the Future PAC, which has received over $100 million from tech giants including OpenAI’s president Greg Brockman.
Seven current and one former OpenAI employee have contributed to Guardrails Alliance. The largest donation came from Juan Felipe Cerón Uribe, a research engineer who expressed concern that his company's efforts to mitigate societal harms caused by AI might go to waste without proper regulation.
The disparity in funding remains stark: Leading the Future’s $50 million commitment dwarfs the $15 million Guardrails Alliance hopes to raise. Despite this, founders of Guardrails Alliance believe public opinion will tip the scales against unregulated AI development.
OpenAI leaders have tried to distance themselves from Leading the Future, but some rank-and-file workers are using their personal funds to directly oppose it. This internal conflict highlights growing tensions over how AI should be regulated and who gets to decide its future.
