Nolan Warns: AI is Like a Trojan Horse

AI might be a gift in disguise, says director who prefers film over digital.

Christopher Nolan, the Oscar-winning director behind “The Odyssey,” has expressed deep skepticism towards artificial intelligence (AI), likening it to a ‘Trojan horse’ that could conceal darker intentions. When asked about AI during an interview with HugoDécrypte, Nolan stated: 'I think AI is a Trojan horse that everybody knows the Greeks are inside.' He added that while young people have shown an extreme distrust of this technology, such skepticism can be healthy as long as it’s balanced with critical thinking.

‘AI has been advancing at a rapid pace but has been completely rejected by the public,’ Nolan observed. This rejection is reflected in his children’s generation's term ‘AI slop’ for AI content online. Nolan believes that this skepticism can help us avoid blindly trusting technology, and instead view its motives with caution to extract the best from it.

The director has been a vocal critic of other technologies as well, notably smartphones, making him appear both a Luddite and a pioneer. His latest film, “The Odyssey,” was shot entirely on IMAX film and cameras, marking a return to traditional filmmaking methods he believes are superior to digital alternatives.

Despite his reservations about technology, Nolan remains an advocate for innovation in other areas of filmmaking. However, he warns that new technologies must be introduced without compromising established and viable systems. “We almost lost film,” he said, referring to the industry’s transition towards digital methods.
