Soccer’s Climate Crisis: FIFA Blindsided by Wildfire Smoke

As climate change looms, will FIFA and other sports bodies learn to adapt or stay in the dark?

The World Cup final is poised for a gritty finish in New York City, but nature's fury threatens to overshadow the game. Wildfire smoke from Canada has blanketed the region, casting an ominous orange glow over stadiums and putting player and fan health at risk.

While other leagues have implemented strict air quality protocols, FIFA appears ill-prepared for such contingencies. Despite efforts to mitigate heat risks, there seems to be no plan in place to address smog-battered matches. The forecast hints that conditions might improve by kickoff, but the uncertainty hangs heavy over the event.

High-level athletes, like Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal, face an outdoor gauntlet of hazardous air, with potential symptoms ranging from coughing to headaches. This is particularly perilous for vulnerable groups, including children and those with respiratory conditions. The Spanish team practiced in New Jersey under such conditions, a move that risks their health.

Prof Nicholas Watanabe questions FIFA's readiness, suggesting they might dodge the worst of the pollution this time but fail to learn from close calls. Climate issues should push sports bodies towards comprehensive plans and regulations, lest we see more athletes and fans caught in nature’s unpredictable crossfire.
