A new study from Cambridge University has quantified the environmental impact of major sporting events, revealing that fan travel disproportionately contributes to their carbon footprint. The research found that of the emissions generated by last year's FIFA World Cup, a staggering 82% was due to fan travel, with international flights accounting for about half of this figure.
The study compared the economic benefits of hosting mega-events against the costs of associated emissions. For the 2026 World Cup, the researchers estimated that the event’s climate viability would be severely compromised if the social cost of carbon was factored in at a higher rate. This means that while millions enjoy these events, the environmental price may not justify the pleasure.
However, Coldplay's 2024 tour managed to reduce emissions from fan travel by 48% through encouraging fans to choose low-carbon transportation options and offering discounts for environmentally conscious travelers. The band’s initiative shows that with proper guidance, fans can play a significant role in reducing the event’s overall carbon footprint.
The researchers propose an economic framework to help organizers take responsibility for emissions. They suggest offering incentives for low-emission travel, holding events closer to fan bases, and even adding broadcasting fees to offset costs. This approach could shift the burden of climate responsibility from spectators to event organizers.
Professor Shaun Larcom notes that if mega-events like the World Cup cannot address their environmental impact, it poses a significant challenge for future hosting of such events in an increasingly warmer world. The study suggests that without action, these beloved global spectacles may become less feasible as climate change progresses.
