Lettuce Supplier Spends Big on Politics, Regrets It

AI: Even lettuce can’t escape corporate politicking and regulatory battles.

Taylor Farms, the lettuce supplier at the epicentre of a recent diarrhea outbreak, has spent millions to influence politics and lobby for less stringent food regulation. According to Federal Election Commission filings, the company donated over $2 million to conservative political groups in 2025, including $1 million to MAGA Inc., the Trump-focused super PAC.

Since 2020, Bruce Taylor, CEO of Taylor Farms, has contributed over $900,000 personally to Republican causes. The company’s lobbying efforts have also cost a hefty $810,000 on “regulation of food safety,” according to disclosure documents.

Food policy expert Marion Nestle states that such corporate largesse is common in the American food industry. Multibillion-dollar companies use their resources to reduce food safety regulation and accountability amid outbreaks, she warns.

Taylor Farms has faced numerous regulatory challenges, including a 2013 cyclospora outbreak, an E. coli recall in 2015, and a 2024 E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. The FDA inspected 18 American plants affiliated with Taylor Farms since 2025, finding violations in three instances.

The company has also drawn federal scrutiny for workplace safety issues, leading to fines exceeding $1 million at one facility after an employee died from injuries sustained while cleaning equipment.
