In a strategic move that blurs the lines between air and sea warfare, Ukraine has been using drone carriers to transport ground robots directly into battle.
The latest deployment involved a hexacopter drone carrying a ground robot via cable. This tactic allows slower wheeled robots to bypass tough terrain and Russian defenses, making rapid advances towards their targets more feasible without the risk of direct soldier combat.
On June 25, Ukrainian ground robots participated in an operation targeting Kinburn Spit, a narrow sandy peninsula that extends into the Black Sea, capturing it from Russian forces. This operation highlights Ukraine’s innovative use of drones and robots to offset Russia's manpower advantage while minimizing casualties among their own troops.
The success of these tactics hinges on their ability to evade Russian surveillance and drone strikes. Ground robots like the ARK-1 can move at speeds nearly 28 miles per hour, though some models are slower. As technology advances, so too does the battlefield landscape, raising questions about future conflict dynamics.
