Amazon has filed an FCC application seeking approval to launch a new satellite constellation named Leo, which will provide direct-to-device services for voice, messaging, data and emergency communications. If successful, the deployment in 2028 will see over 5,100 satellites orbiting Earth, complementing their existing broadband plans.
The move builds on Amazon’s acquisition of Globalstar's satellite network, allowing them to utilize its spectrum for direct-to-device services, much like Starlink now partners with T-Mobile. The FCC application also hints at potential collaboration with Apple and the use of Iridium's spectrum outside the US, despite Rocket Lab's upcoming acquisition of that network.
The satellite system will process signals in orbit, enhancing performance, says Amazon. This is nearly double the size of their initial Leo constellation, which planned to launch around 3,200 satellites. As of July 2nd, 'over 375' have already been sent into space. For disaster response and emergency messaging, these satellites could prove invaluable.
This development in satellite communication suggests a future where global connectivity is no longer limited by geographical borders or terrestrial infrastructure. However, the race to dominate this sector sees tech giants vying for control of our ever-increasing reliance on digital networks.
