7-OH: The Painkiller on the Brink

As the DEA prepares to ban it, users scramble for supplies and detox plans—could this be a harbinger of future drug crises?

A couple months after completing alcohol detox in June 2023, Cam, a 36-year-old from upstate New York, found himself hospitalized with severe injuries from a motorcycle accident. In his pain, he turned to 7-OH, a potent compound that offered relief but now faces federal scrutiny.

Soon, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) plans to classify 7-OH as a Schedule I controlled substance—alongside heroin. This temporary ban, effective from August 5 and potentially extendable for another year, has sent shockwaves through communities that rely on it for pain management.

Archie, a pharmacy student, used 7-OH to alleviate jaw pain but soon found himself dependent. Detox channels like r/quitting7oh are now bustling with advice to taper off the drug, reflecting the growing anxiety among users. For Cam and many others, the ban could mean a return to the misery of chronic pain.

The DEA’s move highlights the complex balance between public health and individual freedom in drug regulation. As debates rage over 7-OH’s classification, the stories of those who have found relief raise questions about how society will cope with future bans on similar substances.
