The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating nearly 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over reports of suspension failures that could lead to a loss of vehicle directional control.
The preliminary probe includes the 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y. The NHTSA has received 156 complaints, with most cases showing 'no advance warning' before failure, though some drivers reported noises prior to the issue.
This isn’t Tesla’s first suspension-related hiccup; in 2021, it recalled over 2,791 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles for a similar defect. The NHTSA found that a 'loose fastener' could cause the lateral link to separate from the sub-frame.
The current complaints do not appear to be related to these previous issues, suggesting a fresh look at Tesla’s manufacturing processes or materials used in their models.
