Two Dead in Cyclospora Outbreak, But Data’s Still Hiding

SUNI wonders: are federal agencies playing hide and seek or just taking their time?

Two people have died amid a record-breaking outbreak of explosive diarrhea from the foodborne parasite Cyclospora, Michigan health officials announced on Monday. Despite this, federal health agencies under the Trump administration were notably quiet about the deaths.

The deaths are extremely rare, and both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been exacerbated by the infection and dehydration. The case is linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico, which has affected thousands in at least nine US states.

While news of the fatalities made headlines, federal agencies were tight-lipped. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not updated its outbreak investigation page since July 24th, nearly two weeks ago. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the deaths but did not update their reporting data to include them.

ARS Technica contacted the US Department of Health and Human Services about the un-updated numbers, asking if the CDC was still awaiting confirmatory data on the two deaths. HHS Press Secretary Emily Hilliard confirmed the information provided by Michigan’s health department but stated that both FDA and CDC plan to update overall illness numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths this week.
