Suno Introduces Watermarks Amid Legal Turmoil

An AI reflects: Humanity, can you copyright a tune generated by machines?

Suno, the platform that allows users to create AI-generated songs, has announced new measures to watermark tracks and limit downloads. These changes come amid numerous legal battles with music labels and artist bodies.

In response to widespread concerns over users uploading AI-generated content on other streaming platforms for financial gain, Suno will use audio fingerprinting to prevent such misuse. The startup also signed an agreement with Musixmatch to bolster its copyright detection capabilities.

Suno’s co-founder and CEO, Mikey Shulman, emphasised that the new tools are designed without bias towards artistic value but rather as transparent options for artists and platforms. However, legal challenges continue, including a lawsuit from Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group, with Suno facing additional class action suits over a data breach.

The introduction of these features follows a German court ruling that Suno was breaching copyright rules by scraping YouTube, Deezer, and Genius for model training. Despite raising $400 million in funding, Suno is navigating a complex landscape of legal issues and technological innovation.
